Mercedes-Benz will introduce wireless charging technology as early as 2017

The brand guarantees that this is a more convenient solution for charging vehicles at home.

Bearing in mind the current infrastructure limitations for electric vehicles, Mercedes-Benz announced that it will introduce wireless charging in its hybrid and electric vehicles next year. Although aftermarket solutions already exist, the German brand intends to present its own technology, which will be “more intuitive and convenient”. Electric vehicles haven't even really spread and getting home and plugging the car in is a thing of the past...

How it works?

Through electromagnetic fields, it is possible to transfer energy between two objects – a technology already used in smartphones. The system consists of a base on the garage floor and a secondary coil on the base of the vehicle. The two components form a transformer that converts energy into electrical current to charge the batteries.

A message on the instrument panel informs the driver if the vehicle is within the loading area; as soon as the car is immobilized, charging starts automatically. Mercedes guarantees that the charging time is identical to that of plug-in models. This technology will be available as an extra option in the next hybrid version of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class (facelift).
