Volvo: Customers Want Steering Wheels in Autonomous Cars

Autonomous cars with or without steering wheel? Volvo surveyed 10,000 consumers to find out their preferences on this topic.

In a very near future, Volvo will have cars capable of driving on their own, reaching destinations safely and in an ecological manner. Does everyone agree with this innovation?

According to research carried out by the Swedish brand, most consumers prefer that cars with autonomous driving technology remain equipped with a steering wheel. This is not to say that consumers discard the innovative technology completely, but admit that they will not always use it.

Lack of confidence or simply not wanting to lose the pleasure of driving? Volvo shows us the results:

Of all respondents, 92% admit that they are not prepared to give up full control of their car. 81% affirm that, whenever they use the autonomous driving system and, by chance, an accident occurs, the responsibility should lie with the brand and not the owner of the car. Volvo doesn't disagree.

If you belong to the group that doesn't want to explain to future generations that “in my time cars had a steering wheel”, rest assured. 88% of the surveyed drivers say it is imperative that brands respect the pleasure of driving and that they continue to produce cars with steering wheels. Of these responses, 78% of customers give their hand to the paddle and say that the art of not driving can make trips more useful and productive.

Finally, the overwhelming majority, 90%, will feel more comfortable being driven by their own Volvo if it passes a driving test. Like all of us humans we also passed. Volvo announced at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) – here and here – that any consumer can leave their opinion on this topic here.
