BMW M5 CS (635 hp) on video. The most powerful ever and the last purely combustion

THE BMW M5 CS it is the most powerful production BMW ever, but that aspect turns out to be of relative importance. It's what BMW M has done to everything else that truly separates the M5 CS from the M5 Competition.

It's the most radical M5 ever and it also promises to be one of the most exclusive. Production will be limited to just one year and the price is several tens of thousands of euros above the M5 Competition.

Diogo Teixeira introduces us to this most refined machine, with supercar performances — 3.0s are enough to reach 100 km/h and 10.4s up to 200 km/h, and 305 km/h… limited — but with executive costume, in the latest video by Razão Automóvel:

BMW M5 CS, the most radical of the M5

The most radical of the M5 makes use of the same 4.4 l twin-turbo V8 as the other M5, but now has 635 hp of power (10 hp more than in the Competition) making it the most powerful production BMW ever. Torque remains unchanged — a generous 750 Nm — but now available in a wider rev range, between 1800 rpm and 5950 rpm.

The transmission is still in charge of an eight-speed automatic transmission that distributes the engine's power to all four wheels, but it still retains the possibility that we can send it all to the rear axle. Carbon fiber paddles ("grasping" to the steering wheel) give us the chance to change gears.

The new BMW M5 CS is also 70 kg lighter than the Competition, with a scale of 1825 kg (DIN). A mass reduction achieved at the expense of more carbon fiber (engine hood and bonnet, front apron, diffuser and rear spoiler, mirror covers and roof) and also because of the “blame” of standard carbon-ceramic brakes — only them they are responsible for less than 23 kg and therefore in the always important unsprung masses.

The ground clearance has been reduced by 7 mm, the shock absorbers are inherited from the M8 Gran Coupé and the tires are almost racing (Pirelli P Zero Corsa). All promising greater dynamic skills and an even more immersive experience.

It also stands out from the rest of the M5 for the bronze details that “spatter” the bodywork: from the 20-inch forged wheels, to the double rim. Inside it's the carbon fiber drumsticks (no armchairs) that capture the attention, but then we notice that the rear seat has been replaced by two individual drumsticks — this M5 is definitely not like the others…

The asking price for the BMW M5 CS, starting at 225,000 euros, is quite high — more than 60,000 euros difference for an M5 Competition. Is it justified?

Well, the BMW M5 CS, as Diogo says in the video, was born a collectible. It's the latest purely combustion M5 and it's the most “accurate” of them all. Never before has BMW M created such a focused version of the sports and executive saloon — by tradition, this type of exercise has always been focused on the M3 and M4.

BMW M5 CS

The BMW M5 CS symbolizes the end of an era.

The next generation of the BMW M5 will have to give way, by force of circumstances, to electrification. Everything points out that it will be some kind of hybrid — some rumors even talk about a pure electric — but it will mean the beginning of a new chapter for this story that started in the distant year of 1985 with the first M5 of all, the E28 generation.
