Volkswagen ID.6. The exclusive 7-seater electric SUV for China

Volkswagen has just unveiled at the Shanghai Motor Show the ID.6 , the latest addition to the ID family and the first for a specific market, China.

Inspired by the ID prototype. Roomzz (lost the sliding doors), unveiled precisely two years ago at the 2019 Shanghai Motor Show, this ID.6 is something of a “big brother” — and bigger! — from the most compact and European ID.4.

Compared to the ID.4, the Chinese ID.6 has a 20 cm longer wheelbase (2965 mm) and exceeds 4.8 m in length (4876 mm), allowing it to offer versions with three rows of seats. and capacity for up to seven occupants.

Based on the Volkswagen Group's MEB platform, like the “cousins” Audi Q4 e-tron and Skoda Enyaq iV, the ID.6 will be available in China with two distinct versions, the ID.6 Crozz and ID.6 X, and with two (net) battery capacities: 58 kWh and 77 kWh.

Why two virtually identical versions? As with ID.4 made in China, it is a consequence of the two joint ventures that Volkswagen has in China, namely FAW-Volkswagen and SAIC-Volkswagen. The ID.6 Crozz will be manufactured in North China by First Automobile Works (FAW). The ID.6 X will be produced by SAIC Volkswagen in the south of the Asian country.

From an aesthetic point of view, the Crozz stands out for having a front “grill” that joins the headlights and bumpers with a lower air intake finished in black and gray protections, while the X features a front section in only one color and with a higher air intake.

At the rear, there are more aesthetic differences, starting with the luminous signature. However, the most visible changes center on the bumper and the position of the number plate.

Still, the aesthetic language of this model is exactly the same as that found in ID.4. And if that's true for the exterior design, it's also true for the cabin, which features the same minimalist design and digital approach that Volkswagen initially introduced in ID.3 and more recently in ID.4.

And engines?

The ID.6 was presented with two rear-wheel drive versions (179 hp and 204 hp) and with a 4Motion all-wheel drive version, with two engines (one per axle), with 306 hp of power.

The latter, the most powerful in the range, allows the ID.6 to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.6s. Common to all versions is the maximum speed, electronically fixed at 160 km/h.

As for autonomy, it varies according to the capacity of the batteries (58 or 77 kWh), with Volkswagen announcing records between 436 km and 588 km (China NEDC cycle), respectively.

Volkswagen ID.6

Exclusive to China

Volkswagen has not revealed when the two versions of the ID.6 begin to be produced or when they will make their commercial debut in the Chinese market, but it is estimated that commercialization will start this year.

Remember that this is the third model in Volkswagen's ID electric family, after ID.3 and ID.4. Later this year we will get to know the ID.5, the sportier design version anticipated by the concept ID. 2017 Crozz.
