New Volkswagen ID.5. The "coupé" of the ID.4 goes further and loads faster

Anonim

The MEB modular construction kit gradually generates more leads. The next is the Volkswagen ID.5 which hits the market in April 2022 with three variants: rear-wheel drive with 125 kW (174 hp) or 150 kW (204 hp) and the sports car ID.5 GTX with 220 kW (299 hp).

The GTX will feature four-wheel drive, replicating the “brother” ID.4 GTX, a consequence of two electric motors, one per axle (80 kW or 109 hp at the front, plus 150 kW or 204 hp at the rear). It is also possible to choose between the chassis with standard tuning and a more sporty one or with variable shock absorbers.

Prices should start at 50,000 euros in our country (55,000 euros for the GTX), about 3,000 more than an ID.4 with a 77 kWh battery (the ID.4 also has a smaller one, 52 kWh).

Once again the German group shows that its focus is on bringing electric mobility to the general public, with medium power levels and lower maximum speeds (160-180 km/h) than that of many models with combustion engines and even direct electrical competitors. Which, however, will only be limiting on German highways without speed limits.

Charging up to 135 kW

The German consortium is also conservative with regard to load power. So far the ID.3 and ID.4 can only charge to a maximum of 125 kW, while the ID.5 will reach 135 kW upon launch, which will allow the batteries under the car's floor to receive power to 300 km in half an hour.

With direct current (DC) at 135 kW it takes less than nine minutes to raise the battery charge from 5% to 80%, while with alternating current (AC) it can be done up to 11 kW.

The maximum autonomy announced for the Volkswagen ID.5, with the 77 kWh battery (the only one available in this model), is 520 km, which is reduced to 490 km in the GTX. Values that will be closer to reality the fewer freeway routes they include.

With the proper infrastructure, it will be possible to make bi-directional loads (ie ID.5 can be used as an energy supplier if necessary). For those interested in traveling with a trailer "on their back", it is possible to do so up to 1200 kg (1400 kg in the GTX).

The new member of the ID electric family. from Volkswagen also passed through Portugal.

What distinguishes you?

The ID.5 makes the difference, above all, for the roofline in the rear section, which gives it that “coupé look” we mentioned (the 21” wheels help to define even more the sportier image), but it doesn't. generate important differences, neither in terms of habitability or luggage.

The second row of seats can receive passengers with 1.85 m in height (only 1.2 cm less in height at the back), and the central one enjoys complete freedom of foot movement as there is no tunnel in the car's floor. it is normal to happen with trams with a dedicated platform.

Rear seat row ID.5

The luggage compartment volume of the 4.60 m ID.5 (1.5 cm more than the ID.4) does not vary significantly: 549 liters, six liters more than the ID.4 and much larger than the ID.4 the trunks of potential rivals such as the Lexus UX 300e or the Mercedes-Benz EQA, which do not reach 400 liters, which can be expanded (up to 1561 liters) by folding the rear seat backs. Electric tailgate is optional.

This is also just the first Volkswagen model to feature an integrated rear spoiler after the Scirocco, a solution we've already seen on the Q4 e-tron Sportback, but which here seems to have a more harmonious integration.

Its reason for being is its aerodynamic accuracy (Cx reduced from 0.28 in the ID.4 to 0.26 and from 0.29 to 0.27 in the GTX), which is reflected in the promise of about 10 additional km in autonomy , given the ID.4 devoid of this resource.

Volkswagen ID.5 GTX

The ID.5 GTX features a more sophisticated light system (Matrix LED) and larger air intakes at the front, it is also 1.7 cm shorter and 0.5 cm taller than the regular Volkswagen ID.5” ”. And both have new features in driver assistance systems, including a memory parking system, new to the ID range.

Inside

The interior and equipment of the Volkswagen ID.5 are completely identical to what we know in the ID.4.

We have the minimalist dashboard with the small 5.3” screen behind the steering wheel, the most modern 12” screen in the center of the dashboard and the large head-up display that is also capable of projecting information in augmented reality a few meters “in front” of the car, so that your eyes don't have to deviate from the road.

The ID.5 brings the latest generation 3.0 software that allows remote updates (over the air), allowing some features to improve the car over its lifetime.

Unlike the “cousin” (which uses the same technical base) Skoda Enyaq or almost all models in the Volkswagen Group, the ID.5 cannot be ordered with animal skin-covered seats, nor as an extra, as it is a choice for everyone. increasingly under public scrutiny.
