The "flying carpets"

Historically, Citroën has been a reference in the quality of damping, capable of filtering and isolating occupants from the irregularities found like few others. All due to the hydropneumatic suspensions that marked generations of Citroën models: DS, CX, GS or, more recently, the Xantia Activa or the C6. So comfortable were they that they were quickly dubbed "flying mats".

One of the pillars of this program are the new progressive hydraulic stop suspensions . The new Citroën C5 Aircross decisively contributes to the return of the “flying mats” with this new suspension, yet another chapter in the centuries-old development of suspension systems that focus on comfort.

The principle behind its operation is simple, but the results are still convincing. The new suspension not only has the expected shock absorber and spring, but also add two hydraulic stops — one for extension and one for compression — with the suspension operating in two stages depending on the type of irregularity you have to deal with.

In case of light compressions and extensions, the hydraulic stops are not even necessary, with the shock absorber and spring being able to effectively control the vertical movement of the bodywork. However, the presence of hydraulic stops ensure greater freedom of articulation to the suspension, guaranteeing the “flying carpet” effect, that is, as if the Citroën C5 Aircross “flyed” over the roughness of the tarmac.

In case of pronounced compressions and extensions, the spring, shock absorber and hydraulic stops (compression and extension) work together, progressively slowing down the movement, thus avoiding the sudden stop that usually occurs at the end of the suspension's travel. Unlike a traditional mechanical stop, which absorbs energy but gives back a part of it, the hydraulic stop absorbs and dissipates that same energy. The rebound (suspension recovery movement) ceases to exist.

This technical innovation by Citroën guarantees the new C5 Aircross — and not only that, as this solution is and will be extended to more models — high levels of comfort, according to the brand's scrolls.

Harder, denser, more comfortable

Along with the suspension of progressive hydraulic stops — which gave rise to the registration of 20 patents —, the Citroën Advanced Comfort® program also incorporates new ways of joining the bodywork and new seats.

In the first case, the various parts that make up the body of the new Citroën C5 Aircross use new joining techniques such as industrial adhesives, which not only contribute to an increase in structural rigidity by 20% (essential for the correct functioning of the suspension) without weight increase, as it allows to reduce the vibrations generated after the damping process.

In the second case, the Advanced Confort seats, inspired by the world of… beds, were optimized in their design, respecting the natural curve of our back. Its contribution to further reducing the vibrations generated by road irregularities comes from the addition of several types of high density foams arranged in layers, preventing bad posture after long hours of driving.

There is not just one Citroën C5 Aircross, but multiples, capable of adapting to all needs and tastes. Common to all of them is the high level of comfort on board.

The new C5 Aircross is available with three levels of equipment — Live, Feel and Shine; 30 exterior combinations — seven colors that can be combined with the Black Perla Nera roof, plus three color packs; five indoor environments ; and finally, four engines and two transmissions — two petrol and two diesel, and six-speed manual transmission and eight automatic EAT8.
