BP invests in rechargeable batteries in just five minutes

The solution, which has been developed by an Israeli start-up named StoreDot , has just received the support of the BP . Which is getting ready to invest 20 million dollars (just over 17 million euros) in the technology that should appear, first, in mobile phones, as of 2019.

However, as announced by the start-up, the objective is to apply, in the future, this type of batteries in the electric cars of the future, in order to guarantee charging times identical to those that any driver takes to fill a fuel tank in a car. with combustion engine.

How it works?

These batteries feature a new structure and materials, with the higher charging speeds being allowed by the higher speed in the flow of ions between the anode and cathode.

This fast charging capability is due to an electrode with an innovative structure. It contains organic polymers — chemically synthesized of non-biological origin — conjugated with metal oxide components from the cathode, which trigger reduction-oxidation reactions (also called redox, which allows the transfer of electrons). Combined with a new separator and electrolyte of its design, this new architecture allows it to deliver high current, with lower internal resistance, improved energy density and longer battery life.

Today's lithium-ion batteries, on the other hand, use inorganic components for their cathode—essentially metal oxides—which are constantly charged by the insertion of lithium ions, limiting ionic conductivity, thus reducing battery density and longevity. .

It's a three in one, as unlike other battery manufacturers, who are able to improve only one of their properties — capacity, charging times or lifetime — StoreDot's technology improves all three at the same time.

Ultra-fast battery charging is at the heart of BP's electrification strategy. StoreDot's technology has real potential to be used in electric cars and allow batteries to be charged in the same time it takes to fill a fuel tank. With our growing portfolio of charging infrastructures and technologies, we are excited to be able to develop true technological innovations for electric vehicle customers.

Daimler is also an investor

Last September, StoreDot already received an investment of around 60 million dollars (around 51 million euros) from the Daimler truck division. Also attracted by the guarantee given by the start-up, that its lithium-ion batteries are not only environmentally friendly, but also offer autonomy, with a single charge, in the order of 500 kilometers, depending on the battery capacity.

Being able to work closely with an energy market leader such as BP marks a milestone in StoreDot's efforts to evolve the ultra-fast charging electric vehicle ecosystem. Combining BP's indelible brand with StoreDot's electric charging ecosystem allows for faster deployment of ultra-fast charging stations as well as a better charging experience for users.
