Toyota TS050 Hybrid: Japan Strikes Back

The TS050 Hybrid is Toyota Gazoo Racing's new weapon in the World Endurance (WEC). It abandoned the V8 engine and now integrates a V6 engine better suited to current regulations.

Following the difficult defense of its World Championship titles in 2015, Toyota has set ambitious goals to once again compete at the forefront of an increasingly competitive and interesting World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Unveiled today at the Paul Ricard circuit in southern France, the TS050 Hybrid features a 2.4-litre, direct-injection, bi-turbo V6 block, combined with an 8MJ hybrid system – both developed by the Motor Sports Division at the Higashi technical center. Fuji, Japan.

It was clear last season that the TS040 Hybrid no longer had the arguments to fight Porsche and Audi models. The new bi-turbo V6 engine with direct injection is better suited to current regulations that limit the flow of fuel to the engine. To ensure maximum efficiency, the front and rear engine-generators recover energy during braking, storing it in a lithium-ion battery for more “boost” in acceleration.

The World Endurance Championship starts on April 17th in England with the 6 Hours of Silverstone. Let's see how the Toyota TS050 Hybrid behaves in front of Porsche's fleet, winners of the last championship.
