On June 10th, Richard Hammond, the well-known host of “The Grand Tour”, was involved in a ghastly accident. Hammond participated in the ramp of Hemburg, Switzerland, filming for another season of the program.

Richard Hammond was at the controls of Rimac Concept_One, the Croatian electric supercar with 1224 horsepower. On approaching a tighter bend, he appears to have lost control, going off the road. The sports car ended up on fire, but luckily Hammond managed to get out of the car in time. According to the producers of “The Grand Tour”, after the accident, Hammond was conscious and talking, having been transported to the hospital by helicopter. The accident resulted in a fractured knee.

Naturally, the internet was buzzing with all sorts of theories about what happened. Which led Rimac Automobili CEO Mate Rimac to clarify some points about the accident:

[…] The car flew 300 meters horizontally, falling from a height of 100 meters. After the first flight, it fell on an asphalt road 10 meters below, where the fire started. I can't say how fast the car was going, but I can't believe the nonsense things that have been written by people who have no idea, or are blind, or just malicious.

Jeremy Clarkson, the more than known presenter of “The Grand Tour”, along with Hammond and James May, even published in his blog on Drive Tribe, that the Concept_One went off the road at a speed of around 190 km/h. And that when it hit the road below, it was supposed to be moving at a higher speed.

Even so, the causes of the deception remain to be revealed.
