Goodyear develops tires...spherical?

It's not quite a reinvention of the wheel, but it's almost. Know Goodyear's proposal for the tires of the future.

With a history spanning over 117 years, Goodyear is currently one of the most famous tire brands in the world. In order to replace the traditional connections to the ground that have lasted since the beginning of the automobile industry, the American company presented at the Geneva Motor Show a solution designed with the autonomous cars of the future in mind, called the Eagle-360.

According to Goodyear, the vehicle's structure is based on tires through magnetic levitation – just like the technology applied to trains in China and Japan – which reduces noise and improves comfort inside the cabin. In addition, the Eagle-360 allows the car to move in any direction, facilitating, for example, parallel parking. On the other hand, you can say goodbye to drifts and power slides…

“By reducing driver interaction and intervention in autonomous vehicles, tires will play an increasingly important role as the main link to the road. Goodyear's new prototypes represent a creative platform to stretch the limits of conventional thinking, as well as serving as tests for the next generation of technologies.”

Joseph Zekoski, Vice President of Goodyear.

The tires are also equipped with sensors that gather information regarding the road conditions, sharing this data with other vehicles and even with security forces. The Eagle-360 offers even greater grip on the floor thanks to small sponges that absorb excess water, as you will see in the video below:
