More engine, with less engine. In brief, this is what Renault promises with the new 1.6 dCi Twin Turbo engine.

The maxim installed in the automotive industry has been to achieve more with less. More power with less displacement, more performance with less consumption. In short: more engine, with less engine. Basically, this is what the French brand Renault promises with its new 1.6 dCi Twin Turbo (biturbo) engine intended for the brand's D and E segment models.

This new 1598 cm3 block will offer a maximum power of 160hp and a maximum torque of 380 Nm, and is the first 1.6 diesel with dual supercharger on the market. According to the French brand, this engine can achieve, with a smaller displacement, a performance identical to that of the 2.0 liter engines of equivalent power – on the other hand, with 25% lower consumption and CO2 emissions.

The secret to the performance of this engine is the «Twin Turbo» system, made up of two turbochargers arranged in sequence. The first turbo is low inertia and provides 90% of maximum torque from 1500 rpm onwards. The second turbo, with larger dimensions, starts operating in a higher regime, being responsible for the development of power in the higher regimes.

Initially, this engine will only be available on models positioned above the Renault Mégane.
