The news was unveiled this Monday at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference in London. Moia is the new brand name for Volkswagen mobility.
The Volkswagen Group announced today the creation of a new brand, its 13th, which was created with the purpose of developing urban mobility solutions, which could include a complete range of electric cars, autonomous driving and even shared mobility solutions and carsharing.
Moia was the name chosen for this new brand, which will be headquartered in Berlin and will be headed by Ole Harms (top left), formerly responsible for the new business and mobility of the German brand. About the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, Ole Harms revealed Moia's plans for the future:
"We want to leverage the capabilities of the Volkswagen Group and use all the technological advantages – such as autonomous cars – to make our services even better, safer and more pleasant for the customer. This is perhaps one of the greatest assets we have. We have plans (and engineers) to industrialize our services and bring them to market at scale.”
Democratize mobility
Moia's offer will not only include services but also new cars. About the brand's first vehicle, Harms explained what its main features will be: “special entry, different configurations for the seats, space on board and an electric motorization”. All features of the Volkswagen Budd-e (below), a prototype presented at the Consumer Electronics Show 2016 and which could be launched even before the end of the decade, perhaps through Moia.
"In the future, our fleet of electric vehicles will contribute to cleaner and quieter cities, where traffic is not only reduced but also distributed."
