Jaguar FUTURE-TYPE. Electric, autonomous, connected and with a smart steering wheel

A few days ago we presented the Sayer here, a steering wheel with voice commands equipped with artificial intelligence. As Jaguar advertised, it will likely be the only part of the car we will need to purchase in 2040. Strange? A little bit. But the concept is worth realizing.

But what kind of vehicle will the Sayer be coupled to? Only one name had been announced: FUTURE-TYPE. It didn't take long for the British brand to publicize its vision of the electric and autonomous future towards which the car is heading… or rather, it rolls.

the most futuristic ever

The new FUTURE-TYPE is by far the most futuristic concept Jaguar has ever introduced. Not only does it meet a future in which the car will become a service on demand – allowing access to different types of vehicle according to needs -, it also explores a new type of vehicle for the brand.

Jaguar FUTURE-TYPE

FUTURE-TYPE offers a glimpse into the potential for the future of driving and car ownership. It's part of our vision of how a luxury brand can continue to be desirable in a more digital and autonomous age.

Ian Callum, Jaguar Design Director

It is characterized by having only three seats – two front and one rear – but organized in such a way that they transform the cabin into a social space when in autonomous mode, allowing for face-to-face communication. And as you can see, its design has little or nothing to do with any car that Jaguar produces today.

It is narrow and the wheels are practically separated from the body. But the futuristic styling is truly guaranteed by the apparent fusion between bodywork and glazed area – remember the Mercedes-Benz F 015?

The FUTURE-TYPE Concept is an advanced research project that seeks to ensure how a bespoke Jaguar can appeal to customers in 2040 and beyond. [...] if there is a choice for on-demand cars that move around cities, we have to ensure that customers want our 24/7 services over competitors.

Ian Callum, Jaguar Design Director

In this future envisioned by Jaguar, although autonomous, the FUTURE-TYPE can continue to be driven if we want. It's one of the reasons behind the Sayer steering wheel. As Ian Callum points out, there is still room for driving, which will become a premium experience and even a luxury one.

If this future is confirmed, where we can choose not to buy a car, but enjoy its advantages, it will continue to be necessary to maintain an emotional connection to the brand to keep it relevant. According to Callum, people will continue to want to travel in style and comfort, so there may even be more opportunities for people to experience what Jaguar has to offer, even if they don't buy one.
