Polestar. After the 1 comes the 2, the 3, the 4...

One of the latest brands to be added to the automotive scene, Polestar, could not have made a better impression . Their first model, simply labeled 1, is an elegant coupé with a high carbon fiber diet. Underneath its body is a plug-in hybrid, capable of delivering 600 hp, when the electric and thermal powertrains work together.

It is expected to arrive at the end of next year, with deliveries taking place in early 2019. The reason for the delay is due to the factory where Polestar 1 will be produced. Located in China, the new factory is not yet operational. Its construction only started last November, and should only be completed in mid-2018.

Polestar 1

A rival to the Tesla Model 3

In the same year that Polestar 1 begins to arrive in the hands of its new owners, in 2019, we will meet Polestar… 2 — for the moment, it is impossible to confirm whether the identification of future models will maintain this logic. And the Polestar 2 will be a medium, 100% electric saloon that will point “batteries” to the Tesla Model 3.

Although we already know the Model 3, the countless problems in the production line are known, which have affected the number of cars that are produced. They are trickling out, and at the moment, it is difficult to predict when the situation will return to normal and Tesla will be able to fulfill the ambitious plans it has for the Model 3.

This is good news for the new Swedish rival, as its arrival on the market will not be as late as the calendar makes it seem.

In 2020, two more models

Inevitably, the crossover, the Polestar 3, could not be missing. It is expected to arrive shortly after 2, in early 2020. Like 2, this will be exclusively electric.

The Polestar 4 is the only model that leaves room for speculation. Also slated for 2020, rumors point to the 4 being a convertible.

With Polestar having confirmed that the 1 will be the only hybrid in the range, with all the rest being 100% electric, does it leave room for it to be more than just an offshoot of the familiar coupe — a rival for the future Tesla Roadster?

rapid development

What we can see in these plans is a rapid cadence of launches, only possible through the use of Volvo components, such as the SPA and CMA platforms. These have already been designed to integrate different types of engines, including 100% electric ones.

Despite its close integration with Volvo, Polestar still has room for manoeuvre. The brand has developed, in a semi-independent way, the modular components necessary for electric locomotion. The aim is that the latest technology associated with batteries and electric motors can be put into your models as late as possible during the development cycle, allowing Polestar to always be at the forefront.

Polestar Performance Parts is to continue

Despite its newly achieved brand status, we will continue to see Volvo models with optional Polestar components. And it looks like there will continue to be room for Volvo models developed by Polestar, such as the S60/V60 Polestar. The future looks bright for the new Swedish star.
