Next Volkswagen Golf GTI could be hybrid

The arrival of the eighth generation Golf GTI is only planned for 2020, but the German sports car is already starting to take shape.

When it comes to the development of new engines, there is no doubt that efficiency has been a priority for the brands, and even models with a sportier pedigree don't escape – which is not necessarily a bad thing, quite the contrary.

At a time when the current generation Volkswagen Golf has already reached the middle of its lifecycle, engineers at the Wolfsburg brand are now focused on the next generation of the model. It is certain that we will continue to have the usual range of current generation engines – Diesel (TDI, GTD), gasoline (TSI), hybrid (GTE) and 100% electric (e-Golf) – the main novelty is reserved for the Golf GTI version that will have an auxiliary electric motor.

To the well-known four-cylinder 2.0 TSI turbo block that equips the current Golf GTI, Volkswagen should add an electric volumetric compressor, similar to the technology found in the new Audi SQ7. This solution will make the torque available in a lower rev range and for a longer time. But that's not all.

The internal combustion engine will also have the help of an electric motor, powered by the same 48V electrical circuit that powers the volumetric compressor – if you want to know more about this technology, check this link. According to sources close to the brand's research and development department, led by Frank Welsch, this measure will not only improve performance of the German hatchback as well as will reduce consumption and emissions.

The launch of the Volkswagen Golf GTI is expected to take place in 2020.
