Toyota C-HR: Another hit on the way?

The Toyota C-HR was the featured model at the Japanese brand's stand at the Geneva Motor Show. Know the first details of the model here.

When Toyota launched the RAV4 in 1994, it inaugurated a segment: the SUV. The Toyota RAV4 was the first model in a segment that is now one of the most popular worldwide. Now, 22 years later, Toyota aims to make its mark again in this segment with the launch of the new C-HR – a hybrid SUV with a sporty and bold design like we hadn't seen in the Japanese brand for a long time.

In fact, the design is according to Toyota one of the strengths of the C-HR. The coupé shapes with well-defined lines are based on the new TNGA platform – Toyota New Global Architecture (inaugurated by the new Toyota Prius) and finished off with black plastics that give the model a more adventurous appearance. The horizontally positioned rear door handle, the long roof and the “c” shaped taillights show the brand's new identity, aimed at a younger audience.

The Toyota C-HR will be the second vehicle on the latest TNGA platform – Toyota New Global Architecture – inaugurated by the new Toyota Prius, and as such, both will share mechanical components, starting with the 1.8-liter hybrid engine with a combined power of 122 hp .

In addition, Toyota offers a 1.2 liter petrol option with 114 hp associated with a six-speed manual transmission or CVT and also a 2.0 atmospheric block with CVT transmission, only available in some markets. Optionally, an all-wheel drive system will be available.

With this new model, the Japanese brand foresees a significant increase in sales, not only for the qualities of the Toyota C-HR but also for the fact that this is a growing segment that is both competitive and profitable.

At the car's unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show, we asked one of Toyota's officials if using a name so similar to the Honda HR-V (the world's best-selling SUV) had been a “coincidence or a provocation”, the answer it was a smile… – now draw your conclusions. The Toyota C-HR is expected to arrive at European dealerships later this year.
