Hyundai Motor Company, through its subsidiary Hyundai Mobis, one of the global suppliers of the automotive industry, unveiled its latest creation in the world of airbags. Able to mass produce its own airbags, since 2002, Hyundai Mobis has introduced an unprecedented airbag for panoramic roofs.

Panoramic ceilings, generally made with special tempered glass, are increasingly common these days, with many being able to open up most of their extension. The purpose of this airbag is not only to prevent passengers from being spit out of the car in the event of a rollover, but also to avoid contact between the occupants' heads and the roof, when closed.

"Epic proportions" airbag

This new type of airbag works similarly to the well-known side curtain airbag, which prevents contact between the occupants' head and the window. It is installed inside the roof itself, and if the sensors detect a danger of overturning, it only takes 0.08s to fully inflate , covering the generous area occupied by the panoramic roof.

During the development process, the unprecedented airbag showed its effectiveness by preventing the dummies used in tests from being spit out of the car; and the considerably more dampened impact of the head, turned a situation of possible fatality into minor injuries.

The development of this new type of airbag caused Hyundai Mobis to register 11 patents.

the biggest airbag ever

Despite the XL dimensions of the airbag presented by Hyundai, it is not, incredibly, the biggest one used in a car to date. This distinction belongs to the Ford Transit side airbag, in the version that includes five rows of seats and 15 seats. The huge side airbag is 4.57 m long and 0.91 m high.
