Mazda unveiled the first images of the concept that will serve as inspiration for the brand's next sports car. A successor to the RX-8 inspired by the RX-7, the most beloved generation of the Japanese model, is expected.
The Japanese brand lifted the veil of its latest concept less than a month from the Tokyo Motor Show. In this first image, we can see the lines of the KODO language – Soul in Motion, a truly Japanese design concept, currently present in the entire range of the manufacturer based in the city of Hiroshima and which appears in this concept mixed with elements inspired by old models of the brand. .RELATED: Our interview with Ikuo Maeda, Mazda Global Design Director
On the internet we find a lot of speculation about the positioning of this concept. Some argue that it is a pure and tough GT, a kind of successor to the Mazda Cosmo, and some argue that it is a modern reinterpretation of the acclaimed Mazda RX-7. Mazda prefers to describe it as a “condensation” of the entire history of sports cars so far created by the brand, in a single model.
Should the return of Wankel engines to the Mazda range materialize, we could be looking at a concept preview of the next RX model. We remind you that the first generation of the RX-8 was discontinued in 2012 for not complying with the emission regulations that became more stringent that year. That said, it is not guaranteed that the production version will adopt this type of engine. The brand says it will not produce a model with a Wankel engine until this format meets the standards of conventional engines (Otto) in terms of reliability and efficiency. The good news is that Mazda has never ceased development and research in and around this architecture.

Details were also released of other models that will be available at the Mazda booth at the Tokyo Motor Show, including the 1967 Mazda Cosmo Sport 110S, the first Mazda model equipped with a rotary powertrain, as well as the Mazda Koeru concept, a crossover SUV that the brand presented worldwide at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The new concept will be unveiled in its entirety at the Tokyo Motor Show, on October 28, the opening day of the event.
