Volvo bought Polestar. And now?

Anonim

Since 1996, Volvo and Polestar have had a partnership. The Swedish brand's most radical models are now built at home, after Volvo bought 100% of Polestar.

Polestar is divided into two areas: racing and performance. The first is a division specializing in motorsports, which brought us iconic models from the Swedish Touring Car Championship such as the Volvo 850 Touring Car. The second is a sports division that has been dedicated to tuning Volvo models, in close partnership with the Swedish brand.

Polestar launched the Volvo S60 Polestar, a saloon capable of completing the traditional 0-100 km/h sprint in 3.9 seconds and reaching a top speed in excess of 300 km/h. If Polestar's credentials are based on technical specifications, when put into practice they assume a sporty vocation with an “open heart”: the Volvo S60 Polestar beat the Laguna Seca record for a 4-door production car, equaling the time of the Audi R8.

An official sports division and investment in electric motors

From now on, Polestar will be playing at home with both feet, once the acquisition of 100% of the capital has been formalized. We can expect new models and more news in the coming years. With a sports division “at hand” the possibilities are endless for a brand like Volvo. The development and application of electric motors will be one of the goals already outlined.

Double sales in 2016

Profiting is the watchword. By the end of this year Volvo expects to sell 750 Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar units worldwide. Next year this number could exceed 1500 units. The aim is to make Volvo's sports division grow at a rate of 1000 to 1500 units/year in the coming years.

Transaction value was not revealed

Although the value of the acquisition of Polestar has not been revealed, it is known that the employees will become Volvo employees. It is expected that the proximity will also bring a broadening of the brand's horizons, involving other models.

Volvo XC90 Polestar?

On the table is a development project for the T8 engine that equips the Volvo XC90, which can see its power increased beyond 500 hp. This 2-liter engine has a turbo and a supercharger, as well as the aid of an electric motor, currently managing to obtain a combined power of 400 hp.
