Why are there 'wavy' roads in Scotland?

The images of undulating roads that you can see are from the village of Arnprior, Scotland and, contrary to what it seems, it is not a sign of incompetence in the marking of the road. The reason for being these marks on the road are purposeful, made for the benefit of road safety.

In Scotland, as in many other countries, speeding in localities is a very present problem and to combat it, the parish of Arnprior opted for a different, even original, solution.

Instead of placing hidden radars or humps every 50 m, the solution found was the “wavy” markings (in zig-zag) even on completely straight road segments.

In theory, these road markings — together with a prominent brick-colored exterior — force the driver to reduce speed, even if unconsciously.

In practice, since it was resurfaced, this road with a speed limit of 30 mph (48 km/h) has seen fewer and fewer drivers speeding, particularly at night. Mission accomplished!
