Wiesmann closes the doors

Since August of last year, the German brand has been fighting the insolvency process.

After an unfortunate coincidence between the expansion of its facilities and the economic crash of the time, since 2009 Wiesmann struggled to survive. After nearly 30 years, the company founded by two brothers has not been able to find any entity willing to pay off its extensive debts to its suppliers.

Allegedly, the factory, which employed 125 people, closed the production line, maintenance services and engineering department on March 31. There are only 6 employees left at Wiesmann who, at the end of this year, will also have to look for a new job.

Wiesmann started by producing hardtops and other accessories for sports cars. Later, it started to produce its own cars, always in close partnership with the M division of BMW, which supplied the engines, gearboxes and transmissions. The most powerful model produced by Wiesmann was the GT MF5 which, using the 4.4l bi-turbo V8 engine that is also found in the BMW X6 M and X5 M, is capable of reaching 310 km/h and accelerating from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds.

With around 1700 vehicles produced, Wiesmann, a company that invested more than 350 hours in the artisanal manufacture of each car, reached the end of the road.
