The “Young & Urban” study, carried out by the Allianz Center for Technology with young people aged between 17 and 24, analyzed the behavior of young Europeans.

Of the 2200 respondents, residing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, 38% said they had already participated in an illegal race, while 41% described driving as “sporty/offensive”. One in five young adults (18% of respondents) drive a modified car and 3% even admit to having made modifications to the vehicle's engine performance.

The data is worrisome but there is hope. Long-term statistics point to an increasingly positive trend, as the number of fatal road accidents involving drivers aged 18-24 dropped by nearly two-thirds per thousand inhabitants (66%) between 2003 and 2013. In ten years, the percentage of accidents among young drivers that resulted in personal injury dropped from 28 to 22%. However, these results only reflect accidents that involved physical damage.

According to the German Federal Bureau of Statistics, most accidents are caused by drivers aged between 18 and 24 years old, a reality that gains dimension if we take into account that only 7.7% of German drivers are part of it. age group. The disproportionate number of accidents involving young drivers indicates that the measures in place to combat risks, such as educational campaigns and the latest automotive technology, are insufficient to guarantee safety at this level.
