Will Volkswagen Scirocco be reborn as an electric sports car?

Anonim

The latest generation of the Volkswagen Scirocco, the German brand's coupé, has been on the market for nine years. Was it forgotten by Volkswagen? That's what it seems according to the most recent rumors. An immediate successor is not planned and it is difficult to justify, in terms of business plan, a model like the Scirocco in the current context, where we are witnessing the growing dominance of the crossover and SUV.

But all is not lost, according to the latest information provided by AutoExpress. Frank Welsch, head of Research and Development for the German brand, in statements and this publication spoke of a new possibility:

For me, we can only use it for a sporty two-door coupe. It's not clear how we're going to make such a car, and we're wondering if we're going to make a concept based on our electric platform; can be a great and fun car.

The hypothesis is being considered and discussed, but it will not prevent the current Volkswagen Scirocco from being produced and that it will take a few years for its successor to appear.

Introduction of the first MEB-based tram in 2020

In 2020, Volkswagen's first electric car derived from the MEB platform will appear, the hatchback I.D., which will be for the brand's electric cars, as the Golf is for the current range.

It is speculated that in the second half of the next decade, the I.D. it could even take the place of Golf, if tram sales grow as much as anticipated.

After this, we will see the futuristic and electric reinterpretation of the iconic Pão de Forma in 2022 – already officially confirmed. For now known as I.D. Buzz will be able to know commercial versions and also motorhomes, in addition to passenger versions.

If a new Scirocco appears, this should happen after the introduction of the I.D. Buzz. The MEB platform proves to be flexible, adapting to the most diverse types, and has the potential to transform the 100% electric Scirocco into a true sports car.

The compact I.D. it's rear-wheel drive – the electric motor is mounted at the back – and the I.D Buzz adds an electric motor at the front, enabling full traction. It's not hard to imagine a Scirocco for every need: rear wheel drive for the oversteer enthusiast and full wheel drive for maximum efficiency.

Volkswagen has been introducing new electric concepts in all the main halls: I.D. at the Paris Salon in 2016, the I.D. Buzz at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year and the I.D. Crozz at the Shanghai Motor Show which took place in April. Frankfurt is less than a month away and is the show where German builders dominate. Will Volkswagen be ready to present another concept that explores its electric future?
