Bosch bets on a touch screen with realistic buttons

The lack of tact of the touch screens could have its days numbered. It's the promise of new technology from Bosch.

We live in a time when touchscreens have almost completely replaced physical buttons. Something as simple as changing the radio station can become a real nightmare when driving on a bumpy road. Users complain about a lack of intuition in handling this technology, in part due to a lack of tact.

For these and other misgivings, Bosch developed a solution: a screen with simulated relief buttons that we can actually feel through touch. It will once again be possible to navigate radio stations by touch, leaving vision solely on the road.

The tactile elements of the screen will allow users to distinguish the buttons. Rough feel will mean one function, smooth another, and surfaces can be created by the user to denote individual keys or specific functions.

“The keys displayed on this touchscreen give us the feel of realistic buttons. It is often possible for users to find the desired functionality without looking away. They will be able to keep their eyes on the road for much longer periods, substantially increasing safety while driving,” says Bosch.
