After Audi announced that it would join the group of manufacturers competing in the Formula E World Championship, starting in the 2017/2018 season, BMW followed in its footsteps and made official its entry into the competition dedicated to 100% electric single-seaters.

BMW i Motorsport will enter the 5th season of Formula E (2018/2019), through a partnership with the Andretti Autosport team. One of the drivers currently representing Andretti's colors, in the current season, is the Portuguese António Félix da Costa, in exchange for Team Aguri in 2016.

Andretti's single-seaters will be powered by an engine developed from scratch by BMW. According to the Munich brand, participation in Formula E will serve as a laboratory for the future development of production models:

The boundary between production model development and motorsport is blurred than any other project at BMW i Motorsport. We are convinced that the BMW group will greatly benefit from the experience gained in the field during this project.

In addition to the entry of new teams, the 2018/2019 biennium will have new regulatory features: as a result of the improvement in the batteries used in Formula E, each driver will have to complete a full race using only one car, instead of the current two .
