It's already official: Mercedes-Benz signed a principle of agreement for participation in the 2018/19 season of Formula E.

A few days after having debuted its new prototype at the Paris Motor Show, which anticipates the future range of 100% electric vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, it seems that the brand's electrification strategy will also pass through the competition. The German team has already reserved a place for the fifth season of Formula E, when the electric single-seater championship will change from 10 to 12 teams.

“We have been watching the growth of Formula E with great interest. Currently, we have been evaluating all the options for the future of motorsport, and we are very pleased with this agreement that assures us a participation in the fifth season. Electrification will play a very important role in the future of the automobile industry. Motorsport has always been a research and development platform for the industry and this will make Formula E an extremely relevant competition in the future.”

Toto Wolff, director of the Mercedes Formula 1 team

At a time when the fifth season is still two years away, the German team may already have a driver in mind: Felipe Massa. The Brazilian driver recently admitted that his future could be DTM, WEC or Formula E, and given the links between Williams and Mercedes, this last option should be a strong possibility.
