Hyundai Ioniq 100% autonomous touring Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Motor Show was the stage for the presentation of a 100% autonomous prototype of the Hyundai Ioniq.

Hybrid and now also fully autonomous.

Hyundai has just unveiled in Los Angeles (USA) its new concept based on the Ioniq, in which the objective was to keep autonomous driving systems as simple and discreet as possible. For this, the brand bet on LiDAR technology hidden in the front bumper, instead of being on the roof, making it look like a normal road vehicle and not a science fiction project.

This technology – from the English acronym Light Detection And Ranging – allows detecting the exact position of vehicles and surrounding objects. In this case, it makes use of Intelligent Cruise Control's frontal radar, Blind Spot Detection (BSD) radar, Lane Maintenance System (LKAS) camera set, GPS antenna and high definition cartography by Hyundai MnSoft.

Hyundai announced that it is still developing its own operating system for autonomous vehicles, with the intention of using much less computing power. Translated, this will result in a low-cost platform that can be installed on future Hyundai models.

NOT TO BE MISSED: Hyundai Ioniq is the fastest hybrid ever

The South Korean brand is currently testing three autonomous Ioniq and two Tucson Fuel Cell models in urban environments at the brand's Research and Development Center in Namyang, South Korea. Two of the Ioniq models will be present at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2017, where they can be seen circling the illuminated avenues of Las Vegas. The tests in Las Vegas will build on Hyundai's ongoing efforts to make the autonomous vehicle more skillful, safe to market and closer to production.
