Lotus is considering launching an SUV and a 100% electric sports car

For now, the British brand seems to be focused on the successor to the Lotus Elise, which should be presented by the end of the decade.

Speaking to the North American press, Jean-Marc Gales, CEO of Lotus Cars, recently confirmed his intention to produce a large model, although it is not a priority for the moment. “SUV’s are an interesting market. We are working on a prototype, but we haven't taken a decision yet”, said the Luxembourgish businessman.

On the other hand, the next generation Lotus Elise seems more and more a certainty, and could reach the market before 2020. Everything indicates that the new model will be slightly wider to accommodate the side airbags and other safety systems – without compromising the vehicle weight, as is the hallmark of the Norfolk-based brand.

As for the engines, Jean-Marc Gales discarded a hybrid system, for adding weight, space and complexity. “Plus, when it's a lightweight model, it's easy to be efficient,” he says. However, the brand's CEO believes that a 100% electric sports car is something to consider, but for a more distant future.
