Segment A is in constant evolution and is increasingly the option of those looking for a good compromise between price and mobility. There are city dwellers with access to the segment, those in the center and those looking for a superior position, almost bumping into the entrance of the B segment. The Ford KA+ fits into the latter.
Leaving aside considerations about the evolution of the market, the new Ford KA+ is aimed at a young, urban audience that seeks more versatility. Far from being the ideal car for a long trip, the Ford KA+ is able to offer a little more than just that 20 or 30 km a day, while remaining a rational product.
At the wheel
Inside, there is room for 5 people and the luggage compartment, with 270 liters, has enough space for a holiday weekend outside the city. As long as you don't strain, of course. Ford guarantees that a 2-metre tall passenger can sit behind a driver of the same height. All this in an exterior less than 4 meters long…not bad Ford.
Getting to the destination is not a headache either. With powers between 70 and 85 hp, the Ford KA+ comes equipped with the new 1.2 Duratech petrol engine, which comes with a variable valve opening system. The engine is dispatched, silent and is coupled to a competent and well-stepped 5-speed manual gearbox. Ford announces a combined average consumption of 5 l/100 km.
In terms of safety, the Ford KA+ has 6 airbags as standard and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System. Already thinking about driving in urban environments, the Ford KA+ was also equipped with a speed-sensitive Electronic Assisted Steering system that makes it easier to manoeuvre.
So that you never leave anything behind, the Ford KA+ has compartments for all your favorite gadgets, bottles (no alcohol of course…) and a new feature: the MyFord Dock. It is one of 21 storage spaces available, located in the center of the instrument panel and allows you to store, place and recharge your smartphone. There is also a “secret compartment” under the instrument panel, accessible only when the driver's door is opened. I don't even want to know what you're keeping here…ok?
Equipment and Options
There are two levels of equipment to choose from and options ranging from heated seats to electrically folding electric mirrors. Get a summary by engines and equipment levels.
Ford KA+ Essential 70hp – remote control door closing, Electronic Stability Control with Hill Start Assistance, Speed Limiter, Ford Easy Fuel system, fog lights, tire deflation detection system, front airbags, front and rear curtain airbags, emergency brake lights, on-board computer and gear change warning light.
- Optional equipment: Cool Pack (manual air conditioning and CD radio with Bluetooth and MyFordDock (for cell phone, GPS, music devices) Pack Smoker, conventional spare wheel and perimeter alarm.
Ford KA+ Ultimate 85hp – In addition to standard equipment for the Essential version: Ford SYNC with voice control in Portuguese and with AppLink system, emergency assistance, Ford MyKey.
- Optional equipment: automatic air conditioning, leather steering wheel with cruise control, heated front seats, DAB audio system, rear parking sensors, electric windows, electrically heated and folding mirrors, tinted windows and 15-inch alloy wheels
Ford MyKey
The Ford MyKey system is one of the options shared by the two available equipment versions (Essential and Ultimate). This system allows you to set a maximum vehicle speed, radio volume limits and restrictions on deactivating security systems such as ESP. It was with the most inexperienced drivers in mind that Ford introduced this system in the new Ford KA+.
Prices and launch campaign for Portugal
The new Ford KA+ is now available in Portugal with prices starting at €10,670. Ford offers a 750€ discount on both versions (70 hp and 85 hp) which can go up to 1,050 euros if when you buy your Ford KA+ you opt for Ford Credit financing. This campaign runs until December 31, 2016.
