BMW 8 Series. The "return" 18 years later

Anonim

Just yesterday we mentioned the discreet end of production of the BMW 6 Series Coupé and today we present the first teaser of the Bavarian brand's next large coupé. BMW refers to the concept as an anticipation of the upcoming 8 Series, a model that has not been seen in the brand's catalogs since the end of the last century.

Because now?

For those who find it strange that BMW would end up with a large coupe like the 6 Series for poor commercial results and then present a new large coupe, the logic is easily understandable.

When moving up the ladder, the prices charged by a model of this nature can also be different. So, even if the model has a modest sales number, the profit margins will be much more appetizing.

That said, the BMW 8 Series will effectively serve as a replacement for the 6 Series – assuming itself as one of the German brand's standard bearers.

The new model is scheduled to arrive in 2018 and, in addition to the coupé, a convertible bodywork and a four-door Gran Coupé are planned.

The teaser reveals little, focusing only on the main features of the model. Still, it allows you to appreciate the overall fluid body contour, a muscular rear shoulder, pronounced rear spoiler, the luminous signatures both front and rear, and of course… the inevitable Hofmeister kink (the curve at the base of the C-pillar that is common to all BMW models).

For the rest, we know little or nothing. But it is natural to assume that the new Series 8, when using the CLAR platform, already present in the Series 7 and Series 5, shares with these models most engines and equipment – which includes a noble V12 engine.

The highlight, however, will be the arrival of the M8 . Scheduled for 2019, it is speculated that it will resort to a more «vitaminized» version of the 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 present in the BMW M5.

Almost 30 years have passed since the launch of the first generation of the BMW 8 Series. Find out all the details of the “original” BMW 8 Series in this article.
