Watch out, Type R! Mégane RS Trophy wants to regain the Nürburgring crown

Already available on the national market, the new Renault Megane RS seeks to reinforce, from now on, its credentials, adding to the curriculum some references of respect.

A competitor in a segment where proposals such as the Volkswagen Golf GTI, the SEAT Leon Cupra or the Honda Civic Type R stand out, the latter currently in real demand for the fastest lap records for cars only front-wheel drive on the main circuits, the Mégane RS decided to put get to work. With the aim of at least regaining a title that was once his: holding the fastest lap at the Nürburgring circuit.

More power, even better arguments

To this end, Renault engineers in a more powerful variant: o Megane RS Trophy . Version with four 1.8 l cylinders should not produce less than 300 hp, in addition to having a more evolved chassis, and all the other arguments of the regular model — four directional wheels, self-locking differential and even… the artificially improved sound of the engine.

In addition to these attributes, the Mégane RS Trophy should also feature (even) wider wheels, larger brake discs, a revised aerodynamic pack and better engine and brake cooling, but also a stripped-down interior — obligatory weight...

A question called transmission

Doubts on this Renault Mégane RS Trophy only regarding the transmission. Since the manufacturer has not yet revealed whether the model will maintain, like the regular version, the option of choosing between a six-speed manual gearbox and a dual-clutch gearbox, also with six relations, or if it will only bring one option — to happen in this last hypothesis, the choice should fall to EDC, the “friend” of records.

Rehearsals have started

However, with rumors pointing to a launch later this year, it is to be expected that Renault will take on the fastest lap record for front-wheel drive cars at the Nürburgring. At this moment, spy photos already released confirm that engineers from the diamond brand are already carrying out tests on the German track.

Guaranteed, however, is the following: if it really wants to recover the record that belonged to its predecessor, the new Mégane RS Trophy will have to do better than the 7min43.8s achieved by the current holder, the Honda Civic Type R, and a lot better than the previous Mégane RS Trophy-R, who said goodbye with a time of 7min54.36s. But, also, "only" had 275 hp of power...
