BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has Mercedes-Benz CLA in sight

Anonim

Debuted in 2012 in the 4 Series and 6 Series and later extended to the 8 Series, the Gran Coupe designation now arrives at the 2 Series in the form of the Series 2 Gran Coupe . The latest member of the so-called Bavarian four-door coupés sets his sights on the most successful of them all, the Mercedes-Benz CLA.

Like its rival, it is an all-in-one, developed based on the FAAR platform (the same as the new Series 1).

Which means that the Series 2 family already has three different platforms: rear-wheel drive for the Series 2 Coupé and Convertible; the UKL2, front-wheel drive for the Series 2 Active Tourer and Gran Tourer; and now FAAR (an evolution of the UKL2) for the Series 2 Gran Coupe.

At the rear the resemblances to the 8 Series Gran Coupe are notorious.

Aesthetically, the Series 2 Gran Coupe doesn't hide its inspiration from its “older” brothers, the other Gran Coupe. This is evident not only in the rear (which gives an air of the 8 Series Gran Coupe) but in the front, where the double kidney (of dimensions… moderate) looks like those used by other four-door coupés from BMW.

New platform brought more space

As with the Mercedes-Benz CLA which shares the interior with the A-Class, once inside the 2 Series Gran Coupe we find a “photocopy” of the cabin of the new 1 Series.

In terms of technology, the Series 2 Gran Coupe offers an 8.8” center screen as standard. When you opt for the BMW Live Cockpit Plus, the 2 Series Gran Coupe now has the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant which is based on the 7.0 version of the BMW Operating System, and which brings with it two 10.25” screens (one for the dashboard. 100% digital instruments).

Where have we seen this interior?… Ahh, yes, in the new Series 1.

When it comes to living space, according to BMW, the new 2 Series Gran Coupe offers 33 mm more legroom in the rear seats than the 2 Series Coupé. The riding position is also higher, but it also has more headroom. Finally, the trunk offers 430 l (compared to 380 l for the Series 1).

Three engines to start

Upon launch, the BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe will be available with three engines: one Diesel (220d) and two petrol (218i and M235i xDrive).

Version Displacement power consumption Emissions
218i 1.5 l 140 hp 5.0 to 5.7 l/100 km 114 to 131 g/km
220d 2.0 l 190 hp 4.2 to 4.5 l/100 km 110 to 119 g/km
M235i xDrive 2.0 l 306 hp 6.7 to 7.1 l/100 km 153 to 162 g/km

As for the transmission, the 218i version comes as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, with the option of having a seven-speed Steptronic dual-clutch gearbox. The 220d and the M235i xDrive both use the automatic eight-speed Steptronic transmission (in the Sport version, in the case of the M235i xDrive).

Speaking of the M235i xDrive, it features, in addition to all-wheel drive, a Torsen differential, BMW's ARB traction control system and M Sport brakes. All this in a car capable of reaching 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9s and reaching 250 km/h of top speed.
