Meet the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. An MPV with its own DNA.

The Bavarian brand has just introduced the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer. According to the brand, a model that tries to bring together the best of the van universe with the interior modularity of minivans. BMW is trying all of this in a new format, promising to maintain the adventurous spirit while preserving the sporty slant recognized by the brand's models – even though this is the first front-wheel drive model in the range.

This new model is thus launched with a major objective: to make up for the lack of a generously sized compact family member in the BMW range. As rivals, the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will meet the Mercedes B-Class and also, albeit indirectly, the Audi Q3. But BMW's new bet doesn't stop with these, models like the Ford C-Max or the Citroen C4 Picasso, although cheaper ones may be passed over by customers looking for something more.

The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer will initially have 3 engines: two petrol and one diesel. The entry-level will be the 218i that debuts the new 1.5 liter 3-cylinder engine with 136 hp, with announced consumption of 4.9l per 100km and 115g per km of CO2.

The most energetic of all is the 4 cylinder 225i with 231hp, capable of reaching 100km/h in just 6.8 seconds and reaching a maximum speed of 235km/h, and still consuming only 6 liters per 100km (amount announced by the brand ).

Between these two blocks, there is the diesel proposal, the 218d with 150 hp and 330Nm of torque. An engine capable of delivering 0-100km/h in less than 9 seconds. But the big advantage is the consumption, only 4.1 liters per 100 km.

Inside we find 4,342 meters long, 1.8 meters wide and 1,555 meters high, available to occupants and luggage. The Series 2 thus combines the compact exterior dimensions with a surprisingly spacious feel on the interior, making it perfectly suited to tackle the growing challenges of urban mobility. In total, there are 468 liters of luggage ready to “swallow” all types of luggage. The seats are fully folding and reclining, and an oversized panoramic roof is optionally available to further enhance the feeling of spaciousness inside.

As with the other BMW models, several equipment packs are available, Sport line, Luxury line and the M Sport pack with a more sporty and aggressive design.

In fact, equipment and security systems are not lacking in the Series 2, as well as a lot of technology. Take the Traffic Congestion Assistant for example. This system gives the vehicle autonomy to proceed autonomously in congested traffic situations, taking the vehicle's reins (accelerator, brake and steering wheel). All this to relieve the driver of monotonous tasks, such as driving in a line of traffic on the highway.

BMW ConnectedDrive also carries many smartphone apps, such as Concierge Service or real-time traffic information. In late autumn it will be time to include the xDrive all-wheel drive system.

There are still no sales prices or dates for market entry, but it is expected that it will be before the summer. Stay with the videos of this new BMW model and the photo gallery, then go to our facebook and let us know what you think BMW's first MPV.
