Glimpse of the future? BMW iM2 proposed by design student

David Olivares, a design student of Mexican origin, shows his vision for an electric sport future for BMW. His aim would be to offer something more “earthly” than the BMW i8, proposing something equivalent to a BMW M2, but 100% electric – logically called the BMW iM2.

Using the M2 and i8 as a reference, the iM2 would aim to offer an enthusiastic driving experience, as long as it doesn't involve long distances. According to the author himself, the iM2 would sacrifice high maximum speed, autonomy and even luxury to achieve that goal.

The most curious detail defined by Olivares would be the absence of any technology associated with autonomous vehicles. The future moves towards a scenario where electric and autonomous cars will be the norm, so the encirclement tightens for those who like to drive. The BMW iM2 would be the starting point for a series of focused models only and only for those who prefer to have two hands on the wheel.

The exterior appearance seems to receive a lot of influences from the current BMW M2, but it is decidedly more avant-garde. Above all, the interpretation of the double kidney which appears to be no more than two panels. Being 100% electric, the cooling needs of the hypothetical iM2 would not be the same as a car with a combustion engine. It could be a starting point for a solution that differentiates the different types of powertrains for BMW in its future models.

Compared to an M2, the BMW iM2 is wider and considerably lower, with the 20-inch wheels “pushed” into the corners, achieving proportions much more appropriate to the car's performance intentions. To complete the package, the iM2 would have full traction.

We don't know what the future holds, but hopefully there will still be room for machines focused on driving.
