Volkswagen gives up on 10-speed dual-clutch gearbox

Volkswagen has ruled out the possibility of launching a 10-speed version of its well-known DSG gearbox.

Costs and complexity. These were the reasons given by Friedrich Eichler, responsible for the engine and transmission department at Volkswagen, for the German brand to abandon the development of the DSG-10, a 10-speed dual-clutch gearbox.

“Two months ago we destroyed a prototype”, said the official on the sidelines of the Vienna Engine Symposium, where the brand presented this engine. “Of course we saved all the data,” he finished.

Why abandon the project now?

As we wrote above, the reasons are related to production costs and the natural complexity of a 10-speed gearbox. But this is not the only reason for abandoning the DSG-10 project.

As we have already reported here, Volkswagen is aiming its efforts at the electric car segment – know more here. And as we know, the torque of electric motors is constant at all speeds, so the use of highly complex boxes is not justified.
