The Ferrari 250 GTO with chassis No. 3851GT has become the most expensive production car ever, after having reached a modest sum of €28.5 million at auction.

Yesterday, in Pebble Beach (California, USA), the history books of car auctions were rewritten. All because of a Ferrari 250 GTO and a record-breaking bid for 28.5 million euros , in an auction carried out by the renowned auctioneer Bonhams.

This copy – only 39 Ferrari 250 GTOs were produced between 1962 and 1964 – dethroned the previous Bonhams record set in 2013, which stood at €22.1 million. A value that was offered by a 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R.

About the Ferrari 250 GTO:

The Ferrari 250 GTO was a model manufactured by Ferrari between 1962-1964 specifically for the FIA Grand Touring. The numerical part of the name indicates the displacement in cubic centimeters of each engine cylinder, while the GTO stands for “Gran Turismo Omologata” – Grande Turismo Homologado, in Portuguese.

Equipped with a 3000cc V12 engine, it was capable of delivering 300 hp of power. In 2004, Sports Car International placed it eighth on the Top Sports Cars of the 1960s list, and named it the best sports car of all time. Likewise, Motor Trend Classic magazine placed the Ferrari 250 GTO at the top of the list of “Greatest Ferraris of All-Time”.

In the featured video, we can feel the excitement and suspense of an auction day. A unique environment: multimillionaires, car enthusiasts, locked in a room and impatient to spend their money. It's like that every year, around this time in Pebble Beach.
