Power of the next Mercedes-AMG A 45 could exceed 400 hp

Honda Civic Type R, Ford Focus RS and Audi RS 3 take care: the Mercedes-AMG A 45 should surpass the 400 hp barrier in the next generation.

New year, renewed ambitions. Since 2013, the sporty version of the Mercedes-Benz A-Class has proudly carried the title of “the most powerful hatchback on the planet”, a status that Mercedes-AMG intends to maintain for years to come. For this very reason, the German brand will bet on a “modest” increase in power in the next generation of its hatchback.

In an interview with Auto Express, Tobias Moers, president of Mercedes-AMG, admits that the design of the new Mercedes-AMG A 45 is a kind of “blank slate”, because the current 2.0 block turbo four-cylinder (which debits 381 hp and 475 Nm) will have already reached its limit, at least as far as the maximum power is concerned.

As such, the Stuttgart brand's engineers are already working on a new engine, which can reach 400 hp of power . An engine that should preserve the 2.0 liters of capacity and four-cylinder architecture of the current generation but that, in everything else, should be brand new. To surpass 400 hp, the Stuttgart brand may resort to technical solutions similar to those used by Porsche in the new 718 (Cayman and Boxster), namely in terms of supercharging.

Also according to the AMG boss, this improvement in the technical sheet will make room for a slightly less powerful version, in the same line as the Mercedes-AMG C63 and C43.
