Known internally as the “Drift Machine”, the unveiling of the next BMW 2 Series Coupé is approaching by leaps and bounds, but to do the nickname justice, we'll have to wait a little longer for the future. BMW M2 (G87).
Like the current model, the future M2 will maintain rear-wheel drive and promises to also keep both the six-cylinder in-line and the manual gearbox — if the new M3 and M4 allow this possibility in their more affordable version, it will certainly make more sense in a “toy ” as the most compact M2.
At a time when everything seems to be changing at the speed of light, maintaining the next-generation recipe that makes the current BMW M2 one of the most exciting BMW Ms to drive is good news and brings a certain sense of relief.
What do we already know?
Unlike the other Series 2 — Active Tourer, Gran Tourer and Gran Coupé — the (real) coupé in the range will remain faithful to rear-wheel drive, based on a shorter CLAR variant, the same platform used by the Series 3 and Series 4.

In the case of the future BMW M2 (G87), everything points to it inheriting from the new M3 and M4 the same 3.0 l twin-turbo inline six-cylinder block (S58). In order not to “step on their heels”, it is expected that their power will be a few dozen horsepower below the 480 hp of their “brothers”. In other words, it will not be different from what has happened so far.
The manual gearbox, the Americans' favorite, will also be accompanied by an automatic — it remains to be seen whether it will keep the dual-clutch one, or whether it will change to one with a torque converter, as happened with the Competitions of the new M3 and M4.
For the rest, the 2 Series Coupé will apparently not be accompanied by a 2 Series Convertible — the Z4 and 4 Series Convertible fill those needs.
