The time when playboys dominated motorsport

Anonim

A documentary about the time when the fuel that fueled the talent of some pilots was adrenaline, alcohol and parties.

Today, in the middle of the second decade of the century. XXI, motorsport is dominated by drivers trained from an early age to be top competition drivers. Faster, faster and more accurate, today's cars demand more and more of the human element. Training is intense, training is daily and diets are strict. A route where friends are exchanged for endless hours of gym training and another endless number of activities aimed at maximum performance on the track. They call them lab pilots. Sebastian Vettel is an example of this "school". Manufactured by the “Red Bull” team, today it is the track machine we all know.

But there was a time when it wasn't like that. A time when motor sport was dominated by marialvas, or as they say in English: playboy's. A time when it was "normal" for a driver to smoke a cigarette before putting on his helmet, drink a beer after a race, or celebrate a victory with champagne and beautiful women. In short, a life lived on the edge, on and off the track.

And if today death in a motorized race is a fatality, in the 70s it was almost a certainty that was only indeterminate in space and time. That's why pilots in the 50s, 60s and 70s, more than at any other time, were playboys eager to live a life that counted in turns and not in years. Tomorrow was always uncertain so they took life on the edge, on and off the slopes.

The documentary we are now publishing is above all a celebration of those times. As Jackie Stewart said, times when “sex was safe and racing was dangerous”. Times when pilots, due to their vices and weaknesses, seemed closer to us, common mortals – perhaps, much more than the “almost perfect” and always politically correct pilots of today. Perhaps that's why we continue to talk about them today, more than 40 years later.

Featured in this documentary are James Hunt (F1 driver) and Barry Sheene (World Motorcycling driver), the biggest stars of that time. Pilots who became known for their achievements on and off the track:
