The German giant is keen to clean up its image, after the scandal that broke out in the US, involving an alleged fraud in the emissions values of the 2.0 TDI EA189 engine.
“Volkswagen does not condone this type of irregularity”, “we are working closely with the authorities involved so that everything becomes clear as soon as possible”, were some of the words of Martin Winterkorn, CEO of the Volkswagen Group, in a video statement posted online by the brand itself.
"This type of irregularity goes against the principles that Volkswagen defends", "we cannot question the good name of 600,000 workers, because of some", thus placing part of the responsibility on the shoulders of the department responsible for the software that allowed to the EA189 engine bypass the North American emission tests.
Who can bear the remaining responsibility for this scandal will be Martin Winterkorn himself. According to the newspaper Der Taggespiegel, the Volkswagen Group's board of directors will meet tomorrow to decide the future of Winterkorn ahead of the German giant's destinies. Some put forward the name of Porsche CEO Matthias Muller as a possible replacement.
Muller, 62 years old, began his career at Audi in 1977 as a mechanical turner and over the years has risen through the ranks of the group. In 1994 he was appointed product manager for the Audi A3 and thereafter the rise within the Volkswagen Group has been even greater, and may now culminate in his appointment as CEO of one of the largest business groups in the world.
