The legendary block that has been providing services for over 50 years, has been the result of a continuous evolution that has taken it to an unparalleled increase in power and to comply with the most demanding environmental standards. In the new Bentley Mulsanne Speed, power grows by 25 horsepower and maximum torque by over 80Nm, figures that may prove short for such ambitions, in a model that rivals a battle tank in terms of weight.
The truth is that this added power allows the 6.75l block to now deliver a healthy 537 horsepower at 4200rpm, and an overwhelming binary, capable of pushing the earth's core, with a massive 1100Nm at a mere 1750rpm.
The recipe went through an exhaustive “blueprint” for the V8 block, with it benefiting from redesigned combustion chambers, including intake manifolds, injectors, spark plugs and compression ratio, not forgetting the new variable distribution system, as well as new software engine management.
The case has also been optimized so that the delivery of torque is carried out more efficiently. The Bentley Mulsanne Speed now has the “S” sport button, which keeps the engine always above 2000 rpm, so that the response is instantaneous.
As a result of the introduction of the latest cylinder deactivation technology, the twin-turbo V8 can now only function as a V4 when full power is not needed, reversing that contention, with 13% higher energy efficiency. A value that translates not only into lower consumption, but also into more environmentally friendly emissions, a record-breaking 342g/km of CO2 and an extra range of 80km.
The performance speaks for itself: the Bentley Mulsanne Speed is able to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 4.9s, gaining 2 tenths of a second compared to the base model.
