It's official: Mitsubishi resurrects Eclipse name

The new model will be Mitsubishi's highlight at the Geneva Motor Show and may hit the market this year. The competition, beware…

Who remembers the Mitsubishi Eclipse? The compact sports car born in the late 1980s was particularly popular in "Uncle Sam lands", and its production lasted more than two decades. In between, the Mitsubishi Eclipse became known on the big screen for its participation in the film Furious Speed.

Now, Mitsubishi has just confirmed the rumors that pointed to the return of the Eclipse designation. This name will give rise not to a sports car but to a compact SUV, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross , which is positioned in the Mitsubishi range between the ASX and the Outlander and has a single objective: to rival the Nissan Qashqai.

TEST: Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, the rational alternative

Aesthetically, the two new images unveiled by Mitsubishi confirm what we already knew: sporty styling, LED luminous signature, a generously sloping C-pillar and sharp lines, similar to the XR-PHEV II prototype presented in 2015 at the Geneva Motor Show. Tsunehiro Kunimoto, designer of models like the Nissan Juke, is largely responsible for this project.

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross will be joined by the ASX and Outlander at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, which kicks off on March 7th.
