The ever-controversial What Car? and from Warranty Direct, puts a Honda model back at the top of the table. At the opposite end we find the Bentley.
Under review were all vehicles aged between 3 and 8 years from a total of 37 manufacturers, where 50,000 Warranty Direct warranty policies were reviewed. The method of calculation by What Car experts? it is based on breakdown percentage, age, mileage and repair costs – cars with the lowest factor are considered the most reliable.
In the top 3, dominated by Japanese, Honda has held the 1st place for 9 consecutive years, Suzuki snatches the 2nd and Toyota takes the bronze. In the top 10, the only Europeans are represented by Ford of Europe in 6th place and the VAG group manages to place Skoda in 8th place.
At the top of the pyramid of this study is the Honda Jazz. Honda's small townspeople don't seem to know what it's like to give consumers headaches or even weigh them in their wallets when going to the garage, with average repair costs below 400eur. Opposite this vertex comes the exotic Audi RS6, standing at the base of this pyramid as the model that requires the most calculations from owners when it comes to maintenance and/or breakdowns, with average repair costs exceeding 1000eur.
Electrical failures are at the top with 22.34% of trips to the workshop, followed by failures in transmission and suspension elements, with a rate of 22%. Interestingly or not, in a cold country like the UK, air conditioning is only responsible for 3% of trips to the workshop.
Why are Porsche and Bentley at the bottom of the table?
The reasons are quite simple, and may not even be directly correlated with reliability issues. Apart from the occasional problems documented in specific models of both brands – often transversal to all manufacturers – it would be impossible to look good in the photograph when trying to compare the maintenance costs of a Honda Jazz with those of a Bentley Continental GT.
There is another factor that does not play in favor of more exclusive brands. Usually customers of these brands are more demanding, and call the guarantee more often than customers of less exclusive brands, sometimes due to problems that otherwise would not be taken into account. Irony of ironies, these are just some of the flaws pointed out to the reliability of a study, which does not seem to be very reliable when measuring the reliability of cars…
