Mazda MX-5 with Cummins 4BT engine: the ultimate drift machine

Anonim

Pistonhead Productions, an automotive publication run by a pool of enthusiasts (like us), wants to marry a small MX-5 with a “giant” Cummins 4BT diesel engine.

It's an absurd plan, and we love absurd plans: getting a Cummins 4BT diesel engine into a Mazda MX-5 in less than 48 hours. Far-fetched? Perhaps, but the determination is such that Pistonhead Productions has already started a crowdfunding campaign to raise the necessary funds to kick-start the project.

The Cummins 4BT engine is the first generation of a family of engines that are very popular in the US and are mostly used in commercial vehicles and vans such as the Dodge Pickup. This particular engine is a 3.9 liter four-cylinder block with torque to give and sell.

Not content with the specifications, the Pistonhead Productions team wants to add even more power to the 4BT. Another task will be to improve the suspension and weight distribution of the car once the engine is assembled.

The base vehicle will be a 1990 Mazda MX-5 that was generously donated by Havelock Car and Truck. The Cummins engine is already on its way, but everything else will need an amount of around $10,000 and that's precisely the amount that is asked for in the fundraiser.

The aim of this project is to participate in sporting events and then sell it. The entire sale proceeds will revert to Huntsville High School, Canada.

At the time of publication of this news, the company had already managed to raise $3,258, which corresponds to a third of the total amount intended, at a time when there is approximately a month and a half to the end of the campaign. If you are interested in contributing to this project, you can do so here.

Around here, we've also started thinking about a similar plan. Mount a V8 engine on a rear-wheel-drive Renault 4L. What do you think?
