Kia GT: Korean sports car could arrive as early as 2017

Everything indicates that the Korean brand is preparing a sports coupé that will be presented next year.

It is known that by the end of the decade, Kia intends to change its image to a more dynamic and sporty brand, and as such, this philosophy will precipitate the development of new models: Rio GT, Sportage GT and Kia GT. While the first two are still being equated by the brand, the Kia GT should even move into production, taking advantage of the inauguration of the new Kia and Hyundai development center in Korea.

Albert Biermann, head of the Korean brand's performance department, confirmed the development of a new top of the range with rear-wheel drive and a range of high-performance engines, which should be based on the prototype presented five years ago at the Frankfurt Motor Show (in the pictures ).

In terms of aesthetics, Peter Schreyer, head of design at Kia, hinted that the new model would adopt a four-door coupé architecture. “The two-door coupés are in a bit of a decline. It would be interesting to develop a model like this, but if there is no demand, it doesn't make sense”, he says. So the Kia GT4 Stinger, unveiled two years ago at the Detroit Motor Show, is unlikely to move into production.

As for the powertrains, for now, a V8 block seems to be out of the question, the most likely being the 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder gasoline engines and 3.3-liter V6 turbo used in the new Genesis models. Another strong candidate is the 200 hp 2.2 CRDI diesel engine variant of the new Hyundai Santa Fe, which has even been tested at the Nürburgring.
