Mercedes doesn't seem to want to waste time introducing the Mercedes GT AMG. There have been many renderings and spy photos running, now with a glimpse of the interior.
Without wanting to rework the SLS AMG grille design, the Mercedes GT AMG should already have the brand's new aesthetic identity to captivate the most demanding tastes. As a direct competitor to the Porsche 911, Mercedes will not want to leave the design to others.
According to Mercedes, the Mercedes GT AMG will be a less exclusive model than its predecessor, the SLS AMG, therefore with a different positioning. Mercedes thus expects a greater return on sales and a stronger everyday sporting image.
The internal platform on which it has been developed has been code-named C190 and will be very similar to the technical layout of the SLS AMG. The Mercedes GT AMG is a coupe that will have a front mid-engine and rear-wheel drive, with extensive aluminum feature to obligatorily contain its weight below 1500kg.
On a mechanical level, the expected block for the Mercedes GT AMG will be the new M177, a 4-litre twin-turbo V8, with a power that should be around the range of 460 to 500 horsepower. However, for a future Black Series version, there is already talk of Stuttgart “secretly” in values in the order of 600 horses. Mercedes does not exclude less powerful versions of this same block to serve access to the GT AMG range. To handle such power we continue to have the services of the 7-speed AMG Speedshift gearbox.
Inside, the new center console stands out, with ergonomic controls identical to those of the new C-Class. In the center, at the top of the Mercedes GT AMG console, is the traditional screen, which is already used in this new Mercedes interior image. As the Mercedes GT AMG is a sportier model, apparently Mercedes opted for a quadrant with 2 large analogue dials, placing the multifunction digital screen between them. It is not yet this that a Mercedes sports model will receive a digital quadrant such as the S-Class.
The Mercedes GT AMG is expected for 2015, but there are already rumors that it will have prices starting at €90,000, plus taxes and legalization expenses. The next Geneva International Motor Show will be the most likely stage for an appearance of the Mercedes GT AMG.
