With a growth of 15.7% (16.2% in the Passenger market and 13% in Light Commercial) the Portuguese car market registered, in 2016, a dynamic greater than that which most brands predicted at the beginning of the year. The 242,220 units sold (207,350 passenger cars and 34,870 light commercial vehicles) place the 2016 market at the level of values before the crisis that hit the market.
For this year, prospects are also encouraging, with the belief that the market may maintain the total number of vehicles sold or grow slightly.
All in all, for the fourth consecutive year the Renault Clio was the best-selling model in our country, seconded by the Peugeot 208. In terms of brands, Renault continues to have reasons to smile as it is the leader in the passenger car market, with 12.5% of market share, which corresponds to the best result of the last decade.
THE 10 MOST SELLING CARS IN PORTUGAL IN 2016
1st. Renault Clio (10,354 units)
For the fourth consecutive year, the best-selling model in Portugal was the Renault Clio. The 0.9L Limited TCe version was the best seller.
2nd. Peugeot 208 (6,335 units)
The Peugeot 208 ranked 2nd in 2016, with 6335 units sold. A model that has been conquering the Portuguese and that guarantees it second place on this list.
3rd. Renault Mégane (5,817 units)
The Renault Mégane rose from 8th place in 2015 to 3rd in 2016, thanks to the arrival of the new generation of the model. It is possible that this year the sales of the Renault Mégane will maintain this upward trend.
4th. Volkswagen Golf (5363 units)
The Volkswagen Golf was the best-selling car in Europe, but in Portugal it did not go beyond 4th place. Still, an excellent result considering that the facelift arrives this year.
5. Renault Captur (5,242 units)
It is the best-selling SUV in the segment. Another winning bet by Renault, inspired by the success of the Nissan Juke.
6. Volkswagen Polo (5,168 units)
It is the second model of the German brand in this TOP 10. A model that is considered by critics as one of the best in the segment.
7. SEAT Ibiza (4,604 units)
Remarkable the performance that the Seat Ibiza continues to have in the national market after so many years. This year comes a new generation, which is expected to catapult the Ibiza to the top of this table by the end of 2017.
8. Peugeot 308 (4,582 units)
Like its little brother, the 308 has also enjoyed a successful commercial career in our country.
9. Mercedes-Benz Class A (4,544 units)
It is the national "best seller" among premium brands. The Class A 180d is the second best-selling version in Portugal (with 3087 units), beaten only by the Clio 0.9 TCe.
10. Nissan Qashqai (4,530 units)
The Nissan Qashqai sales phenomenon closes this «top 10», after the Captur is the best-selling SUV on the market.
