Porsche says gesture control is just strategic marketing

The person responsible for the Human-Machine Interface (HMI) at Porsche, is of the opinion that the gesture control technology is just a juggling "gimmick".

Porsche expert Lutz Krauss thinks that the gesture control technology that some brands have introduced is just for “English to see” and that even those won't be lucky, at least in the near future. Speaking to CarAdvice, the head of HMI for the Stuttgart brand describes gesture control as pure advertising, bearing in mind that current technology is not progressing enough to implement this system.

He admits, however, that in the near future when algorithms evolve, gestures to activate and navigate the control system could prove to be a smart bet.

The reluctance expressed by Krauss regarding the gesture control system is, however, ludicrous, given that Porsche is owned by Volkswagen, and the latter is about to implement gesture control technology in the Golf VII facelift and Golf VIII at the end of next year.

Meanwhile, one of the features highlighted by BMW in the new 7 Series is precisely the support for gesture control. Porsche's fourth generation of PCM – Porsche Communication Management even has proximity sensors that detect when the user's fingers are close to the screen.
