A rigorous academic study or a simple exercise in futurology? These are Hyundai's forecasts for the coming years.

Ioniq Lab is the name of Hyundai's new project, which aims to analyze how current trends will be reflected in mobility in 2030. The study, carried out by a team of two dozen academics, was led by Dr. Soon Jong Lee of Seoul National University.

With this project, Hyundai wants to get ahead of its competitors: “we are going to advance with a theoretical-practical analysis to help develop the future of mobility solutions according to the lifestyle of our customers” – said Wonhong Cho, vice-president president of the South Korean brand.

Here are Hyundai's 12 predictions for 2030:

1. Highly connected society : the way in which we are connected to technology and the result of this interaction will be decisive for future mobility.

2. Society aging at a high rate : by 2030, 21% of the world's population will be at least 65 years of age due to low birth rates. This factor will be decisive for the design of future cars.

3. More and more important ecological factors : Issues such as global warming, climate change and the depletion of fossil fuels will be even more crucial for the automotive sector.

4. Cooperation between different industries : the strengthening of relationships between various areas will lead to greater efficiency and the emergence of new business opportunities.

5. Greater customization : new technologies will be able to identify our routines and preferences in order to allow a more individualized experience.

6. Identification of patterns and opportunities : the barriers that used to exist in the industry should be extinguished to make way for a new, more proactive system, which through open source, 3D printing, among others, will be able to respond to customer needs.

7. Decentralization of power : described as the “Fourth Industrial Revolution”, this movement – ​​resulting from technological evolution – will allow certain minority groups to have more influence.

8. Anxiety and chaos : technological advances will precipitate a scenario of stress, social pressure and threats to our security.

9. Shared economy : through technology, goods and services – including transport – will be shared.

10. Co-evolution : the role of the human being will begin to change, as well as the work hierarchy. With the development of artificial intelligence, new interactions between man and machine are expected.

11. Mega-urbanization : by 2030, 70% of the world's population will be concentrated in urban areas, which will lead to a rethinking of all universal mobility.

12. "Neo Frontierism" : as the human being expands horizons, the mobility industry will have an opportunity to diversify.
