There are events that can change the face of the world, or at least the way we look at certain things. The birth of Albert Einstein, or the moment we discovered that the Easter Bunny doesn't exist, are just two examples of this same reality.

A reality to which we can now add a new milestone: the birth of the first Diesel range prepared by BMW's M division – if you want to know more about the M division click here. It is one of those events that when it comes to the automobile industry, we know it will stir the waters. Have you ever ridden in a BMW equipped with a diesel engine? It could even be the 320d! Have you walked? So you know what I'm talking about… now imagine this but multiplied by 3x! Exactly the same number of turbos that equip the Diesel engine of the new M.

M550D – Wolf in lambskin

We're talking about a 3000cc inline six-cylinder engine, delivering 381hp and delivering 740Nm of maximum torque! But if you think the power achieved isn't anything special, then let me tell you that the massive 740Nm of torque is available as early as 2000rpm, and the maximum power is achieved beyond 4000rpm, meaning a range of revs at which common diesel engines are already at full loss. These values are achieved thanks to the presence of three turbos of different sizes: one for low revs, and therefore smaller so that the filling time is shorter and the response is as fast as possible; another larger one for medium rotations; and finally the biggest one, which starts operating in the last third of the revs and is responsible for taking the engine up to 5400rpm (maximum speed).

This is where the magic happens!

All this, with only one purpose: to make life black for the tires! Well, when it comes to accelerations, the numbers are still impressive. Both the touring version and the saloon version of the M550d can sprint from 0-100km/h in less than 5 seconds. More precisely in 4.9sec. and 4.7sec. respectively.

Certainly one of the most coveted vans of the moment.

As for equipment, they have sporty and adaptive suspensions throughout the range, emblems depicting the M everywhere, and bumpers, rims and the like that match the existing apparatus under the bonnet of the new models. All models will come equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission and the Xdrive system that distributes power to all four wheels, giving priority to the rear axle as expected. Ah, it's true, consumptions…! They are so ridiculous that I forgot about them, 6.3L/100km. I don't think there is a need for comments, do you?

The BMW M Diesels should reach the Portuguese market between mid-May and June. Prices have not yet been released for the Portuguese market, but let's leave the bad news to the end and dream that prices start at €20,000…
